Insects! Swarms of them!

With temperatures finally rising into the 70s in Fort Collins, spring is here, but the grass is still brown and the trees are still bare. Of course, a few days of above-freezing conditions are enough to bring out the mosquitoes (it's still March!) by the swarms.

That's how I was greeted today at the Arapaho Bend Natural Area in Fort Collins where the Cache la Poudre River parallels Interstate 25 for a short ways before crossing beneath the freeway on the way downstream toward Greeley. Arapaho Bend is within earshot of the freeway and within sight of the new Timnath Walmart, which is framed quite nicely by stately cottonwoods quaking in the breeze.

Something about being able to read the Walmart sign out by the freeway goes a long way to make the naturalness of this place seem a bit less so.

Fortunately, Walmart doesn't get in the way of sunset or Longs Peak.
